Spotlight on: White Clay Mountain

White Clay Mountain

After working with predominantly acrylic, watercolour and chalk pastel for 25(ish) years, Bec Lea picked up polymer clay 2 years ago, and hasn’t looked back!

Following the birth of her son, Bec endured a severe bout of post-natal depression, but with a background in strengths and wellbeing, she knew that tactile creativity and building connections would impact positively on her mental health. After a polymer clay unicorn activity with her two-year old daughter (which she said was “horrific”), Bec enjoyed the process so much that she decided to make some polymer clay earrings as Christmas gifts. The Collective Beat found Bec just one month after she opened her Etsy store and invited her and her little business to be a stallholder in our Gerringong store!

Bec says that one of her favourite parts of White Clay Mountain is how the creative process so positively impacts on wellbeing; both her own, and the wellbeing of the people she meets and connects with at her workshops. “This is fundamentally important to me, I barely have to try because I love it so much! It taps into my strengths and values so strongly. White Clay Mountain is me.”

Bec herself is a cancer survivor, and studies strengths and wellbeing at a PhD level, and says to anyone starting or thinking of starting up their own small business to be authentically you and tap into your individual strengths. Inspired by her love of the Illawarra, Bec even named her business after it; “Illa” meaning white clay, and “Warra” meaning mountain.

You can come and see Bec’s beautiful range of jewellery in our Gerringong store at 107 Fern Street, Gerringong.
